Carlo is furious and begins plotting revenge.

Following the election, Viki and Clint reconcile. She also speaks honestly with Roger, explaining that although she will always care deeply for him, her future is with Clint.

However, Viki's determination to fight organized crime soon places her in terrible danger.

Carlo's son, Johnny Dee Hesser, orders Llanview's corrupt police commissioner, Harding, to assassinate Viki.

During a fundraiser, Harding shoots Viki, leaving her seriously wounded.

While recovering from the gunshot wound, Viki suffers a devastating stroke that leaves her unable to speak and partially paralyzed.

Viki faces one of the most heartbreaking ordeals of her life when her daughter Megan Gordon Harrison becomes critically ill with lupus.

Megan's happiness with her husband, Jake Harrison, is interrupted when Jake disappears during a dangerous assignment overseas. Believing he may be dead, Megan becomes despondent and neglects her health.

When Megan's kidneys begin to fail, Viki is found to be the only suitable donor and immediately volunteers to give her daughter one of her kidneys. Tragically, the transplant fails, and Megan's condition continues to deteriorate.

Determined to keep Megan's spirits alive, Viki tells her stories, recalling Scheherazade and One Thousand and One Nights, in which a young woman prolongs her life by telling stories night after night. Viki hopes to keep Megan interested in hearing another story until Jake returns.

Other family members share their memories, giving Viki precious additional time with the daughter she had been deprived of raising.

Reverend Andrew Carpenter travels overseas to find Jake and succeeds in bringing him home. Viki welcomes Jake at the hospital and leaves him alone with Megan.

After sharing tender memories of their marriage, Jake carries Megan to the hospital window to see the tree they planted together, now decorated with paper valentines.

Megan dies in Jake's arms on February 7, 1992.

Viki is devastated. At Megan's funeral, the family honors her wish for a celebration of life filled with music, laughter, and happy memories.
