2000
Viki is diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoes a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Throughout her treatment, she struggles with the physical and emotional effects of the illness while receiving support from her family and Ben Davidson. Viki survives the ordeal, and she and Ben marry in November.
2001
Natalie Balsom arrives in Llanview claiming to be Viki and Clint's biological daughter. DNA testing confirms her claim, revealing that Natalie and Jessica were switched as infants. The discovery throws Viki's family into turmoil as she attempts to understand what happened and establish a relationship with Natalie without abandoning Jessica.
2002
Mitch Laurence returns, reopening painful memories of his past with Viki. He reveals that he drugged and raped her around the time Jessica was conceived and claims to be Jessica's biological father. The revelations leave Viki struggling with the circumstances surrounding her daughters' births.
During the turmoil, Niki Smith resurfaces and attempts to gain permanent control of Viki's life. Niki plots to kill Ben, but Viki ultimately regains control. Ben is accidentally shot by Antonio Vega and left in a coma.
2003
Victor Lord, believed dead since 1976, apparently returns to Llanview. Viki and Todd confront him about the suffering he caused their family. Victor subsequently dies, leaving Viki to face the consequences of his return while Ben remains comatose.
2004
Early in the year, Viki ends her relationship with Governor Harrison Brooks after discovering his corruption.
On Valentine's Day, Viki visits Ben in the hospital and reminisces about their life together. Ben briefly awakens, tells Viki he loves her, and shares precious moments with her before slipping back into unconsciousness.
Viki develops serious heart disease, and doctors warn that she will die without a transplant. A compatible donor heart is located, but it has been contaminated through an illegal organ-trafficking operation involving Llanview Hospital's chief of staff, Dr. Long.
Clint and Joey return to be with Viki as her condition deteriorates. After Ben suffers a fatal brain hemorrhage, doctors discover that his heart is compatible with Viki's. Initially devastated by the prospect of receiving Ben's heart, Viki ultimately accepts that saving her life is what he would have wanted.
On May 27, Viki undergoes a successful heart transplant using Ben's heart. She survives but must face widowhood once again.
During her recovery, Viki offers Dorian the position of chief of staff at Llanview Hospital. By June, she is recovering and gradually resuming her life.
2005
Dorian frames Viki for embezzling funds from Llanview University. Although Viki is eventually cleared, she resigns as university president and returns to work at The Banner.
In June, Viki becomes increasingly concerned about Jessica's troubling behavior. During an angry confrontation with Jessica's alternate personality, Tess, Viki suffers another heart attack and is rushed to the hospital.
Viki learns that Jessica has dissociative identity disorder, the same illness Viki herself has battled for years. Drawing on her own experiences with Niki Smith and her other personalities, Viki tries to help Jessica understand and confront her condition.
Later in the year, Clint returns to Llanview. His renewed presence brings them closer and raises the possibility of reconciliation.
2006
Niki Smith again takes control of Viki and kidnaps Jessica, hoping to force Jessica's alternate personality, Tess, to emerge and reveal the traumatic secret behind her existence.
After regaining control, Viki joins Clint in investigating Jessica's childhood. Their search leads to the devastating discovery that Jessica was sexually abused as a child during a period when Niki controlled Viki.
Viki is horrified that Jessica was vulnerable while she was unaware of what was happening. The discovery forces her to confront the continuing presence of Niki and the fact that her personalities were never completely integrated.
Viki returns to therapy. When Niki later attempts to emerge again, Viki consciously fights her off, recognizing that she no longer needs Niki to protect her as she once did. Although Niki remains part of her, Viki has gained the strength to recognize and resist her.
2007
Viki and Clint's renewed relationship ends when Clint becomes involved with Dorian.
Following Asa Buchanan's death and funeral, Viki decides she needs a change and leaves Llanview on a road trip. She eventually arrives in Paris, Texas, where she begins calling herself “Viki D.” and takes a job as a waitress at the Bon Jour Café.
Away from her responsibilities and family history, Viki enjoys the simplicity of her new life and develops close friendships with the café's owners, Moe and Noelle Stubbs.
She also meets Charlie Banks, a recovering alcoholic searching for his estranged son, Jared. Their friendship develops into romance. When Charlie's attempt to reconnect with Jared ends in rejection and he relapses, Viki encourages him to fight for his sobriety.
Late in the year, Viki discovers that Marcie McBain, who is fleeing authorities with Todd Manning's son Sam, is hiding in Paris.
2008
The new year begins with a crisis at the Bon Jour Café when police surround the building to apprehend Marcie McBain. Desperate to keep Sam, Marcie holds Viki at gunpoint. Michael McBain eventually takes Viki's place as hostage, and the standoff ends with Marcie surrendering.
Viki returns to Llanview, followed by Charlie, and their romance resumes. However, Charlie conceals the truth about Jared being his son. Roxy Balsom falsely claims Charlie is Rex's father, and Charlie goes along with the deception.
When Viki learns that Charlie has lied to her, their relationship deteriorates. Determined to drive them further apart, Dorian pours liquor down Charlie's throat to make it appear that he has resumed drinking. Believing Charlie has relapsed, Viki ends their relationship despite her continuing feelings for him.
In July, Viki gives Dorian a ride, unaware that the car's brakes have been tampered with. They crash, and Viki's heart stops.
During another visit to Heaven, Viki encounters loved ones, including Ben, Asa, and her granddaughter Megan Buchanan-Rappaport. Ben tells Viki that her time has not come and encourages her to return to life and give Charlie another chance.
Dorian initially hesitates to save Viki but, encouraged by the spirit of her late husband Mel, injects adrenaline directly into Viki's heart and revives her.
In December, Charlie reveals that he has rebuilt Carlotta Vega's burned diner to resemble the Bon Jour Café, naming it the Buenos Dias Café. Viki and Charlie reconcile.
2009
Viki and Charlie's relationship deepens, and Charlie proposes marriage in June.
On August 4, Viki and Charlie marry in a double wedding with Clint and Nora.
When Mayor Stanley Lowell seeks The Banner's endorsement for reelection, Viki refuses. With Charlie's encouragement, she decides to run for mayor herself. After Lowell is exposed and removed from the race, Dorian becomes Viki's opponent.
Viki defeats Dorian by a single vote and is elected mayor of Llanview.
However, Mitch Laurence's return creates a devastating family crisis. Jared Banks is shot and killed, leaving Natalie grief-stricken and Charlie overwhelmed by the loss of his son. Viki arrives as Charlie attempts to strangle Mitch in his grief and anger.
Recognizing that her family needs her full attention, Viki steps down as mayor-elect before taking office, allowing Dorian to become mayor.
Unknown to Viki, Charlie begins drinking again as he struggles with Jared's death.
2010
Still devastated by Jared's death, Charlie secretly joins Dorian in a plot to kill Mitch Laurence. Charlie fires at Mitch but accidentally shoots Jessica instead. Although Jessica survives, Viki is horrified by Charlie's actions, and their marriage reaches a breaking point.
Viki considers ending the marriage and leaves Llanview for a time. When she returns, she admits how much she has missed Charlie, and they reconcile, determined to try to save their relationship.
In October, Echo DiSavoy returns to Llanview after more than 25 years. Remembering Echo's role in disrupting her marriage to Clint, Viki becomes suspicious and hires Rex to investigate her.
Echo is revealed to be Rex's biological mother and claims Charlie is his father. DNA results appear to support her claim, although Viki is unaware that Clint has secretly altered the results and is actually Rex's father.
Echo becomes increasingly interested in Charlie and kisses him. When Dorian tells Viki, she confronts Charlie, hurt that he concealed the incident.
Despite their longtime rivalry, Viki and Dorian form an unlikely alliance to get Echo out of Llanview and protect Viki's marriage.
2011
Viki's marriage collapses when she discovers Charlie and Echo having an affair. In April, she walks into Echo's apartment and finds them in bed. Charlie admits the affair has been going on for approximately a month and declares that he loves Echo. Devastated, Viki decides to end their marriage.
Meanwhile, Jessica's continuing struggle with Tess brings Viki's own dissociative identity disorder back to the forefront. Niki Smith emerges again, and Niki and Tess form an alliance during the dispute over custody of Jessica's son Ryder.
While Niki is in control, she obtains an audiotape revealing that Echo knew Clint was Rex's biological father, not Charlie. Niki confronts Echo with the recording and threatens to expose her deception. After Viki regains control, she eventually gives the recording to Charlie, exposing Echo's lies and bringing their relationship to an end.
On April 27, One Life to Live celebrates Erika Slezak's 40th anniversary as Viki with a special episode centered on Viki's battle with her alternate personalities. During the custody hearing, Joey and Natalie suspect that their mother is not herself.
Inside Viki's mind, Niki Smith and Jean Randolph confront each other as Viki struggles to regain control. When Viki collapses, her children's voices encourage her to fight. Jean reminds Niki that if Viki dies, her alternate personalities will cease to exist as well. Niki ultimately urges Viki to survive, and Viki regains consciousness as herself.
In May, Charlie prepares to leave Llanview after Moe Stubbs offers him work rebuilding the tornado-damaged Bon Jour Café in Paris, Texas. Charlie and Viki share an emotional farewell, during which he tells her he will always love his “Viki D.” Viki signs the divorce papers and removes her wedding ring.
Later, Viki learns that Clint is seriously ill and becomes increasingly involved in his life. Their shared history draws them closer as they recall their marriage and the family they built together.
Viki also faces another family upheaval when a man with Todd Manning's original appearance returns to Llanview, claiming to have been imprisoned for eight years. The subsequent revelations expose the man who had been living as Todd as Victor Lord Jr., adding another painful chapter to the Lord family's complicated history.
After Clint is placed under house arrest, Viki allows him to stay at Llanfair. Their renewed closeness eventually leads to a kiss, although Viki remains uncertain about his involvement with Kim Andrews.
In December, Viki returns to Paris, Texas, visits the Bon Jour Café, and again works as a waitress. She unexpectedly encounters Charlie, and the former couple reflects on their marriage and makes peace with its ending.
Back in Llanview, Clint realizes that Viki is the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. He ends his relationship with Kim, although Viki is unaware of his decision as the year closes.
2012
A prison break at Statesville brings Mitch Laurence and Allison Perkins back into Viki's life.
Mitch abducts Natalie and demands Jessica in exchange for her sister. Viki and Clint desperately try to protect their daughters as the situation escalates.
Allison arrives at Llanfair with a gun and confronts Viki and Clint, making a shocking claim about Jessica's paternity. After Allison leaves, the seriously ill Clint collapses, followed by Viki.
In an experience between life and death, Viki is reunited with her late daughter Megan Gordon Harrison. Megan reassures her that Jessica and Natalie are safe, and Viki considers letting go.
Clint appears and urges Viki to return, reminding her that their children still need them and that, after so many years apart, they have only just found each other again. Viki realizes she is not ready to die. Megan sends them back, and both regain consciousness.
DNA testing subsequently confirms that Clint is indeed Jessica's biological father, and Viki shares the news with her family.
On the day before One Life to Live concludes its ABC run, Viki participates in a television tribute to the fictional soap opera Fraternity Row, in which Megan once starred.
Remembering her daughter, Viki reflects on the generations of viewers who have followed the program and passed their affection for it from one family member to another. As Llanview residents gather to watch the fictional show's finale, Viki observes how television families can become an extension of viewers' own families. The sequence serves as One Life to Live's tribute to its audience.
With their family reunited, Clint tells Viki that they have wasted too much time apart. He gets down on one knee and asks her to marry him again.
On January 13, 2012, One Life to Live ends its 43-year ABC run with Viki and Clint reunited and looking toward their future together.
2013
One Life to Live returns on April 29 as an online series produced by Prospect Park.
Viki is again running The Banner and is engaged to Clint, looking forward to marrying him again.
Her longtime rivalry with Dorian resumes as The Banner investigates Dorian's political activities. Viki also faces serious financial difficulties at the newspaper. Despite investing her own money, she is warned that the publication could become insolvent within months. Clint offers financial assistance, but Viki resists accepting his help.
Dorian steers Viki toward the Pellegrino Fund as a possible investment, and Viki invests $5 million. The investment proves disastrous, and Clint secretly intervenes to protect her financially.
When Viki discovers Clint's deception, he explains that he acted out of love, knowing that her pride would prevent her from accepting his assistance directly. Furious that he acted behind her back, Viki returns her engagement ring and ends their marriage plans.
Viki eventually agrees to retain the money Clint provided, but their relationship remains damaged.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey King investigates political wrongdoing involving Dorian, while the financially troubled Banner explores expanding its online presence. Viki also becomes involved in the family's continuing upheaval surrounding Danielle Manning and the return of Victor Lord Jr.
Despite their differences, Viki and Dorian agree to co-chair Llanview's Man of the Year Gala.
Clint's increasingly troubling behavior places Viki in a difficult position. As publisher of The Banner, she must consider her professional responsibility to report his actions despite her personal feelings for him.
At the gala honoring Clint, his behavior spirals out of control. His public breakdown ultimately leads to his being restrained and hospitalized.
The final episode of the online revival is released on August 19, 2013, leaving Viki and Clint's relationship unresolved.
