1980

Joey Riley was born. Tina was still being rebellious and Ted Clayton, the man whom she believed was her real father, had come to town, much to Viki's relief. Tina was kidnapped and Ted, who sold forged art as originals was desperately trying to make Viki fall in love with him. At this time Viki started to become interested in Clint who openly accused Clayton of using Tina's tragedy to endear himself to Viki.

1981

Viki, who was extremely disillusioned and hurt by having been drugged and misled by the now deceased Ted, refused to enter into a relationship with Clint, who felt that working with Viki only on a professional basis was too painful. He resigned, and started working for the rival Chronicle newspaper, and became romantically involved with Edwina Lewis. Upset over Clint's departure and affair, Viki was discovering that her feelings for Clint were deeper than she had realized.

As business competitors, they found themselves on opposing sides in the courtroom, with Clint in deep water. Not only did he print an aritlcle that turned out to be a couple fabrication, through no fault of Clint’s, but the article had originally come into Viki’s hands, and when she showed it to Clint out of professional courtesy, he ran off with it and printed it. With no love lost, Viki sued Clint.

Finally, with one courtroom escapade behind them, Viki dropped her guard and allowed herself to follow her heart where Clint was concerned.

1982

Viki went to jail because she had refused to reveal her source in the baby switching case involving Jenny and Katrina. While incarcerated, she and Clint decided to marry. Viki and Clint were finally married at Llanfair after evicting Dorian. Dorian, as Viki's late-father's wife, had been living there, but the minute she married Herb, the house was supposed to revert to Viki's ownership.
But, of course, Dorian would not move out so Clint physically carried her out.

1983

After returning from their honeymoon at Clint's ranch, the couple merged the Banner and the Chronicle, but with Asa owing 51% of the stock, he made life difficult for both his son and his new daughter-in-law.

David Renaldi, Dorian's ex-husband, and Cassie's father ended up in Llanview because Viki was instrumental. in getting him to sign the contract as the head conductor of the Llanview Symphony Orchestra. In fact, he agreed to accept this post in the small town of Llanview because, as he told his manager, Scott Edgar he was very attracted to Viki, although nothing happened.

In August, Echo DiSavoy came to Llanview. She was a photographer and Clint had developed a strong attraction to her. She bore a strong resemblance to a long lost love of Clint's. However, he did not make the connection. What he didn't know was that Echo and her brother Giles Morgan were out to ruin Clint, as they felt he caused their mother's death when he left her years earlier. Clint and Echo had a brief affair, she staged her own drowning and Clint was almost convicted of her murder, Viki forgave him for the affair, Echo came clean with all the facts, and things went back to normal for the Buchanans.

1984

One of Victor Lord's holding was the Lord-Manning factory. Crooked business dealings abounded and Harry O'Neill entered Viki's life. The trouble at the plant was caused by Mark Pemberton who went into hiding at Viki's cabin after embezzling $1.8 million from Lord-Manning. When Viki arrived at the cabin and Mark took her and the children hostage, she agreed to help him get out of the country if he would let her drop the boys off at Llanfair. Even though Mark was carrying a bomb to keep Viki on the straight and narrow, she managed to leave a trail of clues which led Clint and Ed Hall to the airport just in time to rescue her. When the dust had settled, Harry O'Neill was made president of Lord-Manning.

Upon discovering that Ted Clayton was not her real father, Tina came back to Llanview to search for her heritage, and every time she pressured Viki for information about her mother, Viki’s best friend, Irene Manning. As time passed, Viki got more and more paranoid and became consumed with work on the 50th Anniversary issue of the Banner, which she was gradually evolving into a memorial tribute to her father's greatness. This obsession disturbed and worried Clint and was often the source of arguments between them.

1985

As time went on, Tina accidentally found Victor Lord's infamous "secret room" which contained a shocking letter to Victoria that stated that he was Tina's real father. Tina enlisted Dorian's aid in proving her heritage, and Dorian was more than willing to help. When Tina finally confronted Viki with the letter, she was totally traumatized and refused to believe it. After Tina had left, Viki had flashbacks of her father and of herself standing outside his bedroom door. This so completely unnerved Viki that her mind created an escape. She went into the closet, dressed in unfamiliar clothes, donned a long red wig, and headed to the Backstreet Bar where she introduced herself as Nicole Smith. At the bar she inquired about old friends of 15 years ago...especially about an old boyfriend -- Harry O'Neill.

Nicole Smith returned to Llanfair and quickly became Viki, but from then on, every time Tina pressed her about her parentage, Viki flipped into Niki and met Harry at the bar. But, Niki had competition -- Dorian was also after Harry.

After an incredulous Viki refused to believe the infamous letter detailing Tina’s heritage, Tina showed it to Clint, but Viki insisted that it was a forgery. Through all of this, Viki's constant disappearance caused Clint to ask if she were having an affair, and Viki, who knew nothing of Niki's comings and goings, was very indignant.

Mitch Laurence, Tina's old boyfriend from California, came to town under a very dark cloud. When he discovered that Tina was a Lord heir, his eyes saw dollar signs and he set out to figure a way to get millions for himself. Without telling Tina, Mitch planted a copy of Victor's letter inside the official program at the Banner's 50th Anniversary Banquet. The sparks flew when, after blaming Tina, Viki slapped her half-sister and then had the courage to continue with the banquet, much to the approval of the audience.

Mitch's research uncovered Viki's past mental instability, and when he found another of Victor's letters in the secret room, he felt the fortune was at hand. This latest letter stated that if Niki ever returned, then the entire Lord estate would revert to his other daughter, Tina. Mitch vowed to destroy Viki's sanity and create Niki at the same time, and then marry Tina and get all the Lord money and holdings.

Mitch invented innumerable ways to undermine Viki's self-confidence, and orchestrated many events that triggered Niki episodes. When Clint and the boys were in Arizona, Niki agreed to go out of town with Harry, but on their way to the Seaside Inn, a storm was raging and the car went into a ditch. While Harry was looking for help, a frightened Niki

flipped back into Viki, and our confused heroine returned to Llanfair at 2 a.m. Finding herself soaking wet and dressed in strange clothes, Viki went to Jenny for help, and as she described her ordeals, Viki herself recognized the symptoms and was devastated when she realized that Niki was back. She asked Jenny to assist in therapy and swore her to secrecy.

In order to further distress Viki, Mitch started sending notes signed by Niki, but each time he thought he had Niki “set up” to expose herself, he was thwarted and he could never get Viki to become Niki in public.

After Tina introduced Dorian to the secret room, she and Mitch tricked Dorian into showing it to an unsuspecting Viki. Dorian had no idea how fragile Viki's state of mind was, and when Viki confronted the secret room, she turned into Niki in front of Dorian, who became uncharacteristically and honestly sympathetic. When Viki re-emerged, Dorian offered to help her get well. Viki and Dorian returned to the library from the secret room. They were met by Clint and Jenny, and despite Viki's objections, Dorian insisted on telling everything she had witnessed. The trauma of them knowing the truth caused Viki to start to change into Niki again, but Jenny stopped the transformation and convinced Viki to seek help from Dr. Polk. Dorian was so angry at Tina and Mitch for using her to destroy Viki, that she sided with Viki and went after Tina with a vengeance.

The decision was made to treat Viki at Llanfair instead of a sanitarium, and she and Dr. Polk had three anguishing and revealing sessions which ended with Viki remembering seeing her father in bed with her best friend, Irene. With this new information, Viki conceded that Tina was her half-sister and offered her a settlement, but Tina, and especially Mitch, wanted it all.

Mitch had put too much into this sadistic plot to back off now, and so he stepped up his plan to destroy Viki and claim her fortune. He began by sending her a note from Niki alluding to her romance with Harry, and the thought that she and Harry were lovers threw Viki into orbit. Unable to find Clint or Jenny, Viki called Harry and left a message asking him to come to Llanfair. But when he arrived, Viki, who had turned into Niki, had gone to the bar, leaving Harry to find the note, put two and two together, realizing the scope of the mess. He started looking for her.

Niki fell into Mitch's trap by going to her rented room where Mitch drugged her and forced her to call Clint for help. Mitch's plan was to kill Clint, frame Niki/Viki for the murder, and marry Tina for her fortune. While Mitch waited for Clint, Tina arrived and tried to stop the madness. As they struggled, the gun went off, Mitch regained control of the weapon, a man came crashing throughthe door, and Mitch, thinking it was Clint, shot and killed Harry O’Neill. Mitch, of course, fled the scene, and left Niki sobbing over Harry’s body and Tina with the gun. Shortly after Clint's arrival, Viki returned and Tina, whose fingerprints were all over the gun, had no witness to prove her innocence.

Tina pleaded with Viki to let Niki return, but even with hypnosis it was all in vain, and Tina went on trial for murder with Pete O'Neill as her lawyer. Pete believed in Tina's innocence and swore to get Mitch for his brother's murder. In his determination to prove it, he badgered Viki unmercifully on the witness stand, to the point where he destroyed Viki and Niki emerged. Pete was able to question a grieving Niki who cleared Tina and condemned Mitch. However, there was a big problem - Niki wouldn't go away.

After many unsuccessful attempts to bring Viki back, Clint reluctantly agreed to send Niki with Dr. Polk to his sanitarium. But weeks later Niki was still around so Clint decided to try to effect a cure by bringing her home to the familiar surroundings of Llanfair. There, Clint and Niki declared a fragile truce while she resisted all attempts to revive Viki.

Some time later, Niki had a fight with Clint, got in an auto accident. After regaining consciousness, Niki tried to flee but was found by Clint, and in order to prevent him from sending her back to the sanitarium, Niki hit upon a brilliant plan - she would pretend that Viki had come back. To pull off this masquerade, Niki realized that she needed to know more, and therefore packed up Viki's old diaries and video tapes and went to the cabin to practice being Viki. She was a good learner and succeeded in fooling everyone but Tina, and they agreed to a strange alliance of silence, each for her own benefit.

The stress of the cover-up was great, and because Niki wouldn't let Clint share her bed, he coped with the rejection by drinking excessively. Bo talked him into quitting the drinking for the children's sake, and Clint, who was so desperate to believe that his wife was back, was completely taken in by Niki's scam, even though she was reluctant to let him really share her life.

While Clint was away at a press conference in NYC, Tina and Niki went out on the town and arrived home late and tipsy. Clint had also arrived home and was worried, and then shocked and angry at the ladies' arrival. In order to quell Clint’s anger, Niki became amorous, and much to Tina’s disgust, Niki let Clint carry her up to bed, where as things began to heat up, Niki passed out. When she awoke in the morning Niki had a terrible hangover, was in a state of undress, and Clint was in bed beside her.. She asked herself the question - "Did we or didn't we?" Clint wouldn't say, and Niki couldn't remember. Clint continued to press Niki for more intimacy but she rebuffed him, which, of course, drove him crazy. She then started to feel sorry for clint and strong feelings for him began to develop within her.

From his jail cell Mitch Laurence orchestrated a kidnapping plot against Viki - the ransom being one million dollars. He planned to have a thug kidnap her in NYC at a press award dinner which Clint had insisted that "Viki" attend. While in the city, Clint romanced Niki and she found herself starting to fall in love with him, but that didn't stop her from dropping a bombshell at the dinner - she announced that she had decided to sell the Banner to the highest bidder. A stunned Clint headed for home with Tina hot on his trail, as she had decided that she wanted Clint for herself. (Asa saved the Banner for the family by buying it.)

Niki came home from New York, and seeing Tina in her bed with a drunk and passed out Clint triggered the return of Viki. When Viki then went downstairs and spotted a desk calendar with a date 3 months later than she remembered, she realized that Niki had been in control for that long. She then tried to call her psychiatrist, Dr. Polk, but was chloroformed by the kidnapper, Stick, and taken to a deserted bar.

When she awoke from the anesthetic she was one again feisty Niki who, when she was told what had happened, wanted to join forces with Stick, split the ransom, and leave town. Although Stick was taking orders directly from the imprisoned Mitch, Niki started to assume the leadership and upped the ante to 2 million dollars - with an even million split between her and Stick. He had other ideas and planned to kill her and keep the money. So, when the ransom came, they eluded the police and went to the cabin but Niki managed to leave enough clues behind so that Clint was able to rescue her after he was shot, knocked out, and almost strangled. While all this drama was being played out, the character was doing flip-flops between Niki and Viki. Niki feared for her survival because Viki was coming out all too frequently. In order to save herself, Niki decided that she must divorce Clint, who tried to stop the proceeding, but failed.

Niki was able to get a quick divorce just at that time that Clint had figured out that she had been pretending to be Viki. Then, after the divorce and for his own. peace of mind, Clint pleaded with Niki to admit the truth (that he had just figured out), finally shaming her into confessing. Clint then agreed to keep the secret that the person everyone felt was Viki Buchanan was, in truth, Niki Smith.

Tina saw this divorce situation as the perfect time to try to snare Clint, and attempted to get him to marry her by claiming to be pregnant with his baby - the one that was supposedly conceived on the night that Clint got drunk after the NYC episode. But, Clint would have nothing to do with her ploy, as he still wanted only Viki.

Clint then launched an all-out campaign to court Niki in hopes of bringing Viki back to life. His plan began to work as Niki, who was extremely cautious with her feelings, started to to tumble to Clint's wooing. But Clint laid too many traps to trick Niki and even though they worked momentarily and Viki would emerge, Niki would quickly return and then become livid with Clint for trying to destroy her.

1986

But, Niki and Clint did become closer and on one particular night out, they returned to Llanfair where Clint had plans for a very romantic evening. All was going well and Niki was responding to Clint's amorous attention. The submerged Viki could not take it any longer and she did emerge, only to go back into hiding when the phone rang and "broke the spell", so to speak.

The phone call was an emergency for Clint and after he had gone, Niki panicked and decided that if she were going to survive, she must distance herself from Clint. But before she left, she had a marvelous confrontation with her mirror image, Viki, who told her that she could not escape from her (Viki) by running away.

A frantic Clint asked all around for Niki's whereabouts and finally forced Tina into admitting that she might have gone to the inn where Niki and Harry were heading the night of the storm. During this same time period Clint was told by Dorian that Tina was, in truth, not pregnant.

Clint did indeed find Niki at the inn and tried desperately to convince her to come back to him, but she flatly refused. It was now time for drastic measures, and Clint concocted a plan.

Clint lured Tina to the inn under the pretense that he had given up on Viki and now wanted only her. He then arranged for Niki to arrive at his room just at the right time - when he was pretending to make passionate love to Tina. Clint’s hope and dream was that the sight of him and Tina might shock Viki into emerging, just as the shock of seeing her father and Tina's mother together those many years ago had caused the initial emergence of Niki.

Everything went as Clint had calculated that it would, and Viki emerged and then merged with Niki to make one powerful and now healthy Viki Buchanan. The next day they returned to Llanview only to find that no one would believe them - that Niki was really gone. Clint and Viki went to the Mountain View Sanitarium to have Viki evaluated by Dr. Polk. He was finally convinced that Viki was really Viki and Clint left on a vacation with the kids. Right after Clint and Viki left Polk's office he was murdered by a psychotic Tracy James and Clint was blamed for the murder. Viki went undercover pretending to be Niki and let herself be committed to Mountainview. Clint was convicted and sent to jail. Viki was almost killed by Tracy but succeeded in exposing Tracy and clearing Clint.

By then Tina had taken over Llanfair using the clause in Victor Lord's letter stating that if Viki became Niki Smith, Tina would get the Lord fortune. Viki had the Lord assets frozen and eventually won the Lord estate back from Tina.

Viki found out that she was pregnant just before she and Clint remarried.

David Renaldi was in trouble in Vienna and Clint and Viki went to help him and Jenny. After a life-treating adventure in Vienna to save David they returned and went to the ranch in Arizona.

While they were away, Tina intercepted a letter to Clint from El Paso and went to Texas where she met Cord Roberts, who turned out to be Clint’s son. Cord followed Tina back to Llanview and Maria, his mother, followed. Maria, Clint's childhood lover, tried to scuttle Clint and Viki's marriage by bringing Tom Dennison, Joe Riley's twin brother, to town.

Tom turned out to be Joe Riley's twin brother. When Viki returned from the ranch she was shocked to meet Tom and they searched for proof that he really was Joe's twin.

In September, Jessica Buchanan was born. Jessica was kidnapped by Allison Perkins who was being controlled by a post-hypnotic suggestion from Mitch Laurence (who had been killed by Dorian).

Maria inadvertently revealed to Viki that Cord was really Clint's son and Viki decided to tell him, even though they were worried about Jessica.

Maria found out about Allison and manipulated the situation so that Clint suspected Viki had once again turned into Niki and kidnapped Jessica. Viki was angry at Clint's suspicions and it caused a rift between them. By the time Maria had gotten Allison to return Jessica, Clint and Viki had broken up.

Clint and Tom had a terrible fight which Viki witnessed. The stress from it caused her to undergo an eight year memory loss. She could not remember who Clint was and thought Tom was Joe Riley.

1987

Tom Dennison convinced Viki to get medical treatment for recurring severe headaches. They learned she had a brain aneurism which required immediate surgery and was the cause of the headaches as well as the recent memory loss.

During the surgery, Viki had an out of body experience in which she met her guardian angel, Virgil, who took her to heaven and reunited her with all her deceased friends and relatives. She came back to life and remembered who Clint was. They were reunited.

Maria still wanted Clint for herself and decided to poison Viki. Tina learned about the plan and tried to stop Maria. They scuffled and Maria was fatally poisoned instead. Tina went to jail for Maria's murder.

Viki disguised herself as a prison nurse to get into Statesville to check on Tina. Jamie Sanders spotted her and tried to cremate her. Jamie escaped prison with a friend while Cord and Max broke Tina out. Jamie tried to take Tina hostage, but Clint stepped in to help. Jamie shot him in the head, causing him to go blind. Viki decided to move the family out to Clint's ranch where he would be better able to deal with his loss of vision.

1988

In Arizona, while practicing for a race, Clint was thrown off his horse and hit his head on a rock. After a long search, he was presumed dead and the family mourned for him.

Clint actually went back in time to Buchanan City, 1888, where he met his ancestors and a woman named Ginny Fletcher, who'd recently broken up with Randolph Lord. She was an ancestor of Viki's. Clint felt he would never return home, so he began to court Ginny and they agreed to get married.. Back in the future, Viki was mourning Clint and set out to the desert to learn about his death. She travelled back in time and interrupted Clint's wedding to Ginny. Viki and Clint played matchmakers to Ginny and Randolph, Viki's great grandparents. They returned to the future together.

Viki received an invitation to her high school reunion, and Larry tried to convince her not to go. She insisted and found out that no one remembered her being at graduation. Through detective work, Viki learned she had left school during the senior year, had a baby and had the memory erased by a hypnotist.

Michael Grande came to town looking for the city of gold, Eterna, an underground city that had blown up years before. Michael tried to turn Viki back into Niki, who apparently knew the whereabouts of Eterna. Leo Cromwell, who was hired by Michael, came to town and convinced Viki that he was the father of her baby - Christine Cromwell.

1989

Through Michael's machinations, Viki and several others were trapped in Eterna. Roger Gordon, Sarah's and Megan's father and recent arrival in Llanview, was among them. He finally confessed to Viki that he used to ive in Eterna, but had found a way to escape to the outside. There he'd met Viki when she was in high school. They made love and she had his daughter, Megan. While in Eterna, Viki and Roger's old feelings for each other began to resurface, but once they managed to escape the underground city, they had to quell their emotions.

Back on the outside, Megan had a difficult time accepting Viki as her mother. Viki found a marriage certificate for her and Roger. She confronted him and he had to confess to even more truths. He and Viki had gotten married, but her father discovered their romance. Viki chased Roger into Eterna, which blew up. This triggered her split personality to emerge and she had her baby as Niki. Victor Lord discovered the incident and gave the baby to Roger, asking him to leave town. Roger raised Megan with his new wife, Carrie. Austin Buchanan came to town and wreaked havoc on Bo and Sarah. Viki became entangled in the plot and Austin shot her. Clint took her to his ranch in Arizona to recuperate.

Roger, still in love with Viki, tried to get her involved in his new life. He asked her to co-chair the Llanview Centennial celebration. Clint became jealous and angry at this, but Viki decided to do it anyway. During a visit to the Lord Crypt, Clint found a copy of Roger and Viki's marriage certificate and was furious that this information was kept from him. He insisted Viki and Roger get an annulment, even though that marriage was no longer legal. Roger refused at first to go through with the annulment, but later gave in for Viki's sake. Roger revealed that he still loved Viki. Viki also confessed her feelings, but she also loved Clint and had to be true to her family. During an overnight business trip with Roger, Clint assumed Viki had spent the night with him. Despite Viki's denials, Clint beat Roger up and stormed out. Viki followed, but Clint had left for his ranch. During some attempts to reconcile, Clint asked if Viki would move with him to Arizona. She agrees reluctantly at first, but then changed her mind. Clint moved by himself to rebuild Buchanan City.

Tina had discovered a baby-selling ring and convinced Viki and Roger to play a husband and wife willing to buy a baby. When Clint returned home, he found them playing marrieds and was furious. Viki convinced him of the importance of the operation. Clint agreed to help and ended up rescuing Roger and Viki from the warehouse explosion, set-up by the baby-sellers. Viki and Clint became close once again.

1990

Kevin tells Viki about the drug problem at his school. Viki exposes the drug dealers and forces the mayor to resign.

Roger convinces Viki to run for mayor of Llanview, much to Clint's displeasure.

Clint refuses to support Viki for mayor. Roger becomes Viki's campaign manager and their friendship begins to grow again. Viki receives death threats but bravely remains in the race. Clint and Roger conspire to protect Viki. Roger goes undercover as one of Herb Callison’s campaign workers. Clint and Roger decide to keep Viki ignorant of their plans, and she is devastated by his "betrayal". Eventually, Michael Grande is discovered as the driving force behind Herb's campaign. It is also determined that Carlo Hesser, a leader of organized crime.

In a close election, Viki Buchanan narrowly defeated Herb Callison and was elected the new mayor of Llanview. Viki vowed to stamp out drugs in Llanview—drugs that were being distrubted by Michael Grande and Llanview’s new crime boss, Carlo Hesser. During the campaign, Viki fingered Carlo as the drug boss, splashing his name across the from page of The Banner. The battle lines between Carlo and Viki had been drawn!

Soon after the election, Viki and Clint mended their relationship, and Viki gently told Roger Gordan, that while she would always love him, her place was with Clint.

The new mayor faced immediate danger when Carlo Hesser’s son, Johnny Dee ordered Llanview’s corrupt Police Commissioner Harding to assassinate Viki. Durimng a fund raiser, Harding shot Viki. While recovering from the bullet wound, she suffered a stroke that rendered her speechless and paralyzed. With her usual poise and perseverance, Viki struggled to recover.

Tina, who was on the island as a guest of Carlo’s son, Johnny Dee, was stunned to see her Llanview friends—and her ex-husband, Cord. Tina kept mum, but faced a horrible dilemma when Johnny spotted her speaking to Cord. To keep Johnny from searching Cord’s room, Tina stalled him…by seducing hi, After sleeping with Johnny, Tina went to bed with Cord; after their night of lovemaking, they decided to start dating again. To her horror, Tina discovered she was pregnant—and she didn’t know who the father was. She mistakenly believed that her child was Johnny’s. Cord, in true form, agreed to raise and love the child as his own. When Johnny learned of the baby, he tried to kidnap Tina from Llanfair but was killed by the paralyzed Viki, who turned into Niki Smith, regained use of her legs, and climbed the mansion stairs to shoot Johnny before he could drag Tina away.

1991

Carlo's initial plan to get back at Viki was to kill her daughter, Megan.

He forces Gabrielle to slip the drug into Viki's drink at a party, but Jake is on to him and prevents this from happening. Viki pretends to be drugged in order to find out what he is up to.

Carlo is able to get to Viki and inject her with the drug. He orders Niki to shoot Megan. Viki is able to exert enough control on Niki to prevent the murder. Bo and Alex obtain the antidote from Alex's father and Niki once again becomes Viki. Carlo's plan has failed.

Viki is cleared of the murder of Johnny Dee, as it is determined that it was a case of self defense. The Buchanans rejoice. Viki resigns as mayor in order to have more time for her family.

Viki senses that something is troubling Clint, and that he’s hiding something from her. He tells her that it is problems at the Banner that are weighing on him, but she is unconvinced.

Cord and Tina tell Viki that they have seen Clint with a woman named Sondra and suspect him of having an affair. Viki decides to investigate and is crushed to find Clint and Sondra together. It seems everyone's suspicions are confirmed.

Clint tells Viki that he is not having an affair. Sondra is a psychotherapist, helping him to cope with the fact that he is dying. Viki is devastated by the news. Clint asks her to keep his condition a secret.
